Johnston Ridge - timber blowdown

The lateral blast destroyed a mature forest. All vegetation within 12 miles of the crater was destroyed, leaving a landscape of fallen timber and charred stumps. Much of this forest has been successfully replanted except for the vicinity of the Johnston Ridge Observatory. Note in the second figure the uniformity of the replanted forest: the spacing between branches is the same on each new tree.
